Amy Pritchard has spent more than three decades living inside the machinery of democracy — not commenting on it, but building it, breaking it open, and rebuilding it stronger.

She has organized in neighborhoods devastated by gun violence and mass incarceration, on Native American reservations, in Texas oil fields, and alongside genocide survivors and political prisoners. Her candidate work spans every level of the ballot, from city council to U.S. President — up and down, local to national, because she has always understood that power operates at every altitude simultaneously. Her issue portfolio is as wide as American democracy itself: gun control, marriage equality, abortion access, public education, health care, tax reform, and union organizing — all united by a single conviction that real power must be built for the people who have historically had the least of it.

She has helped elect bold leaders including Jared Polis, Elizabeth Warren, and Ayanna Pressley. But the work she is most proud of is less visible: having helped more people find meaningful jobs in the progressive ecosystem than almost anyone else in the field.

Over more than three decades, Amy built a career that defies easy categorization. She has organized in neighborhoods devastated by gun violence and mass incarceration, on Native American reservations, in Texas oil fields, and alongside genocide survivors, political prisoners, and leaders in witness protection.

Her issue portfolio is as wide as American democracy itself: gun control, marriage equality, abortion access, public education, health care, tax reform, and union organizing — all united by a single conviction that real power must be built for the people who have historically had the least of it.

In 2019, Amy took a public stand that cost her professionally but cemented her reputation as someone who puts principle before comfort. When Democratic leaders introduced a loyalty oath banning consultants from working with challengers to incumbents, she called it out — publicly, in the pages of The New York Times. The policy was designed to protect entrenched power, not democratic values. It would disproportionately harm women, people of color, and the new voices most likely to challenge the status quo. Clients left. Colleagues stayed silent. She spoke up anyway.

That moment was not an aberration. It was a clarifying expression of who she is: an insider unafraid to call out her own side — because she actually wants it to win.

The same instincts that drove Amy into community organizing in Boston eventually took her across borders. Her international democracy work spans 26 countries across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe — training women candidates, building party infrastructure, and strengthening civil society in places where democratic participation is hard-won and the stakes are existential.

Her field work has taken her to South Sudan, the DRC, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kosovo, Libya, Morocco, Nepal, Myanmar, Indonesia, The Gambia, Rwanda, Kenya, Liberia, and beyond — working alongside women leaders, youth organizers, and political parties navigating some of the world's most complex democratic environments.

What Amy brings to every international context is not a script — it's a framework. Democracy is not a product to be exported but a process to be cultivated, locally, by the people who have to live inside it. Her approach is relentlessly practical and deeply relational, built on the conviction that trust is the only currency that matters.

Amy's relationship with Rwanda began when a colleague at NDI asked if she'd consider serving as Country Director there. She received the offer 24 hours after the conversation and accepted. She arrived in January 2011. It was her first time on the continent.

What she found changed her. She immersed herself in Rwanda's democratic institutions, its women leaders, its extraordinary commitment to rebuilding after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. One of the first people she met was Elizabeth Dearborn Hughes, founder of the Akilah Institute for Women — a women's college in Kigali. Amy joined Akilah's board in 2018.

In 2015, she returned and rented a house she thought she'd stay in for three months — and stayed far longer than she ever planned.

When the pandemic shut down Rwanda in 2020, a graduating class of women was unable to complete their mandatory internships. Amy offered her space and used Global GAIN as the vehicle to create an apprenticeship program in communications and storytelling. Twenty women enrolled. What was supposed to be 90 days turned into a year. From that program grew Intwari Women, a local Rwandan NGO now in its third cohort.

Today, CoKiyovu — a Women's Leadership & Democracy Center being built in Kigali — is the culmination of everything Amy has been building toward. It is a global political leadership institute for women and democracy advocates, rooted in Rwanda and open to the world.

Today, Amy's work is organized through the GAINiverse — a network of interconnected organizations she has built, led, and nurtured over decades. At its center is Global GAIN, the nonprofit connecting democracy and gender equality activists across the globe. Around it orbit GAIN Power, GAIN Voters, Women GAIN, Amplify Power, and Digital Turf — each one created to solve a real problem in the democracy infrastructure.

The GAINiverse is not a corporate structure. It is a living ecosystem, held together by shared values, deep relationships, and an obsessive focus on what actually works.

Amy splits her time between Cambridge, Washington DC, and Kigali. She is an insider unafraid to call out her own, a connector who has helped more people find their place in progressive politics than almost anyone else, and a builder whose most important work may still be ahead of her.

The democracy she is fighting for is not a distant ideal. It is something she is constructing, piece by piece — in state capitols and village meeting rooms, in PAC filings and Substack posts, in training curricula and building permits in Kigali.
